DAY 14 - Wednesday, October 3 - DAILY QUOTES

Jody – I’m so grateful for a great morning and a short riding day. To start, it was a little warmer today - warm enough that I didn’t need to start out wearing my neoprene boots. I really appreciate warmth! Riding out of Bodega Bay, I saw a bobcat run into some trees. A little later I enjoyed watching 3 otters playing in a river. We rode through lots of farmland. It was sunny and beautiful. I really enjoyed smelling the farms, hearing the birds and animals and seeing the cows and sheep. Dave and I stopped to take a picture of a farmer feeding his sheep. I went by the farm for Wallaby Organic Yogurt which I really like so that was cool too. It was also nice riding along the bays. By God’s Grace, this was a pretty enjoyable day all things considered. I felt pretty strong riding despite the many hills. Kristi made an awesome salad for lunch and now we get to have tacos for dinner – yay! I’m still biking for Christ and so glad that God created rest. I look forward to a couple days off after tomorrow.

Dave – Today we started out on highway 1 and ended on highway 101. It was our shortest day so far. We rode 60 miles. It was nice coming into camp in the middle of the afternoon. We hit some of the roughest road surfaces we’ve had on this trip. We are now about 10 miles North of the Golden Gate Bridge. Tomorrow will be a big day. We’ll cross the bridge and go to Santa Cruz. Our total for the trip is now 1069 miles.

Kristi - 3 meals to go, then 3 days off from cooking. I confess, I am looking forward to the break. Today was a short, but hectic day. A short day for the cyclists means that the support crew has to do all of the same things that they do every other day, only faster because there is less time to do stuff while the cyclists are riding.  All of that to say, I was sad to not be able to bike today. It looked like a fun ride (no mountains). I’m hoping to ride tomorrow though. Cooking is going well…. There aren’t many leftovers, so either I’m not making enough or everyone is eating it all up.

Josh - I’m just loving life. I’m happy to hop in my car seat in the motor home when we are ready to roll. When the motor home comes to a stop I’m quick to say, “Out. Out.” I love exploring all the places that we stop. Mom & Dad are thankful that everyone helps to watch me so I don’t get into too much trouble.  In the store the other day the lady thought I was so cute she just gave me a slice of cheese from the deli. Life is good.

Craig – Today was the warmest start yet.  Yeah!  It was a great day of biking.  Today we ended our ride about 10 miles north of San Francisco.  We are all really looking forward to riding across the Golden Gate Bridge in the morning.  I praise God for the continued strength and ability to ride each day.  Josh is doing great.  Kristi is doing a fantastic job serving everyone while biking 20 miles a day herself.

Jeff - For last few days I have been riding through head winds, up some of the steepest hills, through biting cold mornings, rain, and some rough roads. I am having the time of my life. God’s beauty is so glorious. I have ridden beside cattle, seen dear eating in pastures, elk walking beside me, and numerous other animals. It’s a lot of hard work, but so satisfying. I am so grateful that God has given me this opportunity to ride. I am also grateful to all of you that have supported me through this trip. Thank you to all. Please remember to keep all of us in prayer.

Steve – I think we are all thankful to have only ridden 60 miles today.  It was a pretty ride through hills and farms and then into a suburb of San Francisco.  Riding through the city in traffic was hectic but I’m learning.  There have been many moments during this trip when I’ve thought that this whole trip was too unbelievable to be true – riding through the Redwood Forests, summiting hills along the coast, and weaving through farms and small country villages.  Yesterday came another such moment.  While cycling up our steepest climb of the day, gasping and sweating heavily, I was enjoying the scenery.  As it was late in the ride, I was trying to drink as much water as possible to keep from becoming too tired.  Towards the top of the hill there was construction going on and one-way traffic.  When it was my turn I proceeded to the top with the traffic.  Shortly after pedaling past the construction zone, there was a herd of cows walking up the hill more or less at my pace.  On one side of the road was a drop off; on the other side the rockface went straight up.  So the cows and I went on together.  I don’t know where they were going; I guess home, though it was still early in the day.  At one point the downward traffic had to stop because the cows were blocking the lane.  Briefly I tried to herd them to the side of the road, but, hey, I’m no shepherd and clearly the cows didn’t respect me.  Beyond the cows, on the descent, we were down to one lane again because there was a film production, possibly a car ad.  At that point, as I looked at the ocean, it all seemed too unbelievable to be true.  There I was cycling up along this beautiful oceanside cliff, past a construction zone, through a movie set, and alongside a herd of cows – all too raise pesos for a Mexican Bible school.  How odd.  So everyday brings new adventures and new laughs.
