DAY 19 - Wednesday, October 10 - DAILY QUOTES

Jody - It was kind of a hard start due to the rain. We rode past fields of lettuce and stuff so the shoulders were really muddy. Somehow I managed to get completely covered in mud. The stop at the outhouse will go down in the memory books. It was a relatively nice one (as those things go) but it might never be the same. Once it stopped raining, the mud dried. It was hard and caked on everything. My bike squeaked so much it had a tune. The first thing I did when we got to the State Park was I washed my bike and my rain/mud clothes. I’m so glad I have neoprene boots and rain pants!! It’s been a gift to talk on the phone with friends at times. It really helps the miles pass without noticing them.

Dave - Today started out with a light rain. This wouldn’t have been too bad if we had not been going through an gricultural area. There was a lot of mud on the pavement which ended up on us and our bikes. By lunch the sun was out and we were getting dry and trying to get the mud off our bikes. We had a couple of big hills in and out of Lompoc. I reached a top speed of 41 mph coming down the hill into Gabiota. We arrived at our campsite at El Capitan with a total of 80 miles. Just 3 riding days to go.

Brad - We left in the rain again today. Thank God for fenders and kick stands and rain coats. Things cleared up rather quickly as we headed up the hill into Vandenberg AFB, down into Lompoc and back up out of the valley and down to the coast. Breakfast happened at 28 miles but lunch didn't happen until after 60 miles. Can you say starved. We ate lunch late at a nice spot along the coast but still had a long ride to the camp ground. It was moved another 8 miles from where we expected and then a mile into the site. I think Kenny is getting tired of our whinning!

Jesse – The day started out in rain, and we got pretty muddy. Fortunately we had the chance to clean up a bit at breakfast. I thought the profile of the ride was supposed to be really hilly, but it was not too bad. There were a few big hills, but they didn't seem to be as steep as they looked on a map I saw, and I don't think they were as long as some of the other hills we had on other days. During today's ride I was pretty motivated to get to the end, as I met up with family in camp, after not seeing the boys or Sherry for 3 weeks. I tried to get in as early as possible so that I could be showered by the time they got there. It was close, I was showering when I heard them outside. I was glad to see them, but it was hard getting to sleep. The boys were pretty excited, but I was pretty tired, and used to my routine. By the way, today was Sherry's birthday too so we had a cake and sang happy birthday for her after dinner.
