DAY 11 - Sunday, September 30 - DAILY QUOTES

Jody – Some time a little before 4 pm I was ready to be done today. I had to dig deep to keep going. It was supposed to be an 80-mile day. Also, around this time someone commented, “We’ll probably get in early today. We’ll probably be to camp around 4:30 or 5 pm because we only have about 10 more miles.” Well, after 95 miles I arrived at camp about 6:30 pm. We were greeted around mile 86 by some support crew where we found out we had almost 9 more miles – at least 3 of which were steep climbs. The Lord gets all the credit and this is about all I have to say.

Craig -  It was another cold start early this morning, but as the day progressed it got a little warmer.  Our afternoon route took us through the “Avenue of the Giants” where we were able to ride through several redwood tree groves.  The hills were slight and the views were amazing.  Our campsite was a little further down the road than we anticipated so the chili socks got to climb 3 more mountains than expected to finish out the day.  I praise the Lord for the health and strength to complete the challenge of each day.

Mary- today was a grueling day, I’m not sure why but there where too many scenic detours and I was tired!!! At one point Katherine said “one more big hill” and I thought she said ONLY one more hill!! Boy did I want to say some things that where not nice. There was nothing but hills for the next few miles at one point I cried & I wanted to quit. But I pursued and finished (with a pit stop at Burger King) and felt good about myself at the end and even apologized to Katherine.  The one cool thing was, we stopped at the top of a hill where it curved around and you could see the ocean, we stopped to see the beautiful view and heard seals we walked over a few feet and saw dozens of seals sunning themselves and playing and the rock. We also say elk this morning, they were magnificent.

Puppy- Today was fun we saw some big doggys today that mommy called Elk. I don’t know what kind of dogs they are but mommy got real nervous when I barked at them to say Hi!! They looked like they wanted play because they started to walk our way. I did start to get real homesick today when I thought about my friends Solomon and Josiah, I really miss them a lot!!! Mommy says we get to see them soon. I sure hope they come fast!! I know they will want to play with Josh too.

Jeff - God is awesome, he got me over the 2 big hills. I am still alive!!! Riding thru the redwoods was awesome, came across lots of Elk, they are such awesome animals. One walked right into the middle of the road and looked right at me as I was stopped he then walked across the street to eat, he was amazing. I didn’t even notice the difficulty of the ride due to the beauty of the scenery, until my knees started screaming the last 10 miles of the ride.

Kristi - I loved my 19-mile ride today. It happened to be a fairly flat stretch with way more down hills than up hills, which was great. Cooking is going well. Everyone seems happy with the food, so that’s a good thing. I think I’m taking some time off from cooking when I get home though. The way I figure I’m cooking for 20-25 people twice a day ( I’m VERY thankful for Shirley & Wes who do breakfast.), when I normally cook 1 meal a day for 3 people…. So when this trip is done I’ve cooked enough to last for a few months of eating out.  Makes sense, right?

Josh - I slept in today. No one knows how or why, but I didn’t get up until after the cyclists left camp this morning. I enjoyed my ride on daddy’s bike today. We had a family picture taken in the middle of a huge redwood tree that we rode through. When we got to camp today I had my first lesson on what a time out is. Mommy thinks it was quite effective, but I didn’t like it at all. The campground where we are tonight has a huge fort with slides and rope ladder and climbing wall and my favorite…. a little horse on a spring.

Dave – We left Eureka on a cool but sunny morning. After a stop for breakfast along the side of the road we came to the “Avenue of the Giants”. Just as we started riding through the redwoods, Brad Rigney called me from the North Park Community Church. I was able to give the congregation an update and asked them to continue to pray for us as we approach the halfway mark of our trip. The day ended with a light rain and an unexpected 14 miles further than we thought we needed to go. The 94 miles today brought our total mileage to 849.

Mary- I got to sleep in a cabin last night, our wonderful friend Kimberly rented it and asked Jeff, Puppy & I to stay in there with her. It was so nice to get a good nights sleep in warm air. I didn’t cough at all last night and I woke up in a good mood this morning with lots of energy!!! Jeff picked me a flower this morning and gave it to me at a turn!! I even got on the bike earlier than usual today and rode thru Avenue of the Giants. It was magnificent. But then as we were riding thru the beautiful redwoods I heard a POP and my back wheel stopped I thought I had a flat so I asked a car driving by to tell Jeff and by the time he got there we realized my tire was fine but 4 spokes had broken and my wheel would not turn. Then we found a broken one in front. So I am not going to be able to ride till we get it fixed. Maybe the wheels off Jeremy’s old bike will work, we are going to try tomorrow.

Puppy- Steve gave me a flower today, I think he likes me!! I like him a lot!! I got to see some real big trees today, they were cool, mommy was frustrated and had to ride in the Van the rest of the day. But I got to sleep. Then it rained tonight and people took turns holding me so I could keep them warm. I am so tired know I am going to bed.

Jeff -  Today we started out by riding in the rain and it was biting cold!! It warmed up a little but there was a horrible head wind that lasted almost the whole day. We did get to go thru Ave of the Giants, which was beautiful!!! The last part of the ride we tackled a few long hills. Our friend Kimberly rented a cabin but they aren’t pet friendly till Oct 1st which is at midnight so we are sleeping in the tent in the rain!!

Steve – The day started cold, but as we were riding I was able to look back over my shoulders and see the sunrise over a mountain.  Then it began to warm up a bit.  We’ve been going through amazing Redwood forests the last couple days.  Some of the trees are twelve to fifteen feet across, or more.  And they stretch up so tall toward the sky.  I try to take moments to pedal slowly and take it all in, but the beauty is just too great.  Best just to be in awe of what God has created.  Eventually the route led us back onto the highway and into where we thought we were to camp.  At that point we were told the campground was another 8 miles further on with some steep climbs and narrow shoulders.  A group of four of us decided to press on and tackle the hills.  It was so satisfying to make it here to camp.  Riding those hills, it was definitely God’s strength ‘cause mine was done for the day.  I’m enjoying being in a position where I am having to push myself each day, and knowing that He is guiding, protecting, and teaching me along the way.  It’s been a nice change of pace and scenery from the clinic, serving to refresh me and renew me for when I return in the middle of October.  That’s all for tonight, as it would be good to get some sleep.
